Hydrogen is seen as one of the twohas several roles to play the the development of viable aviation Net-Zero solutions. Hydrogen can be used directly in planes, either via a fuel cell or combustion. It can also be used as a feedstock for, alongside Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF)., to investigate as aAirlines and aeroplane manufacturers are looking to both the fuels as a low-carbon alternatives, while the airport buildings and supportive ground transport could all use hydrogen to decarbonise operations.
The maritime sector faces unique challenges in its quest for decarbonisation, but hydrogen stands out as a beacon of hope—particularly in the form of ammonia. Recognising ammonia’s potential as a hydrogen carrier and fuel, Hydrogen UK is actively promoting its use in shipping. Ammonia, composed of hydrogen and nitrogen, offers a high energy density and the ability to be transported and stored at scale, making it an ideal alternative for long-haul maritime journeys.
Hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) emit only water vapour, drastically cutting air pollutants and greenhouse gases. By promoting the adoption of FCEVs, we are helping to reduce the environmental impact of road transport and improve air quality in urban areas.
Hydrogen is expected to be the dominant choice for heavy vehicles that have high utilisation, heavy loads and require long ranges such as hydrogen HGVs and, emergency service vehicles and is also currently being used in buses.
Building a network of hydrogen refuelling stations is crucial to the widespread adoption of hydrogen vehicles. Hydrogen UK is collaborating with industry partners and government agencies to expand and enhance the hydrogen refueling infrastructure, ensuring accessibility and convenience for hydrogen vehicle users.
