Hydrogen UK is delighted to announce that contracts have been signed for several of our members’ projects under the first Hydrogen Allocation Round (HAR1). This significant milestone marks a crucial step forward in advancing the UK’s hydrogen economy and underscores the pivotal role our members play in achieving the UK’s ambitious hydrogen production targets.
The Hydrogen Allocation Round is a cornerstone in the UK’s strategy to lead the global transition to low carbon hydrogen production. With 10 projects now having signed contracts—totalling 120MW of electrolytic capacity—this round marks the largest cohort of commercial-scale green hydrogen production projects to progress simultaneously in Europe. The UK government has committed over £2 billion in revenue support through the Hydrogen Production Business Model, alongside £90 million from the Net Zero Hydrogen Fund to support the construction of these projects.
Our members’ projects are a testament to the robust and investible nature of the UK hydrogen sector. This could unlock up to £11 billion of private investment and support more than 12,000 jobs by 2030.
The projects with signed contracts include:
- Barrow Green Hydrogen by Carlton Power in the North West, with a capacity of 21.0 MW
- Bradford Low Carbon Hydrogen by Hygen in Yorkshire, with a capacity of 24.5 MW
- Cromarty Hydrogen by Scottish Power and Storegga in Scotland, with a capacity of 10.6 MW
- Green Hydrogen 3 by HYRO in the South East, with a capacity of 10.6 MW
- HyMarnham by JG Pears and GeoPura in the East Midlands, with a capacity of 9.3 MW
- Langage Green Hydrogen by Carlton Power in the South West, with a capacity of 7.0 MW
- Tees Green Hydrogen by EDF Renewables Hydrogen in the North East, with a capacity of 5.2 MW
- Trafford Green Hydrogen by Carlton Power in the North West, with a capacity of 10.5 MW
- West Wales Hydrogen by H2 Energy and Trafigura in Wales, with a capacity of 14.2 MW
- Whitelee Green Hydrogen by Scottish Power in Scotland, with a capacity of 7.1 MW
These projects, spanning across England, Scotland, and Wales, will collectively invest £413 million of private capital upfront between 2024-2026, creating approximately 760 direct jobs during construction and operation.
Clare Jackson, CEO of Hydrogen UK, commented:
“Signing these contracts demonstrates the confidence and commitment of both the Government and industry in building a sustainable hydrogen sector. Our members are at the forefront of this transition, and their projects will play a vital role in meeting the UK’s net-zero targets while driving economic growth and job creation.”
Hydrogen UK remains committed to supporting our members and the broader industry as we embark on this transformative journey. We look forward to seeing these projects come to fruition and contribute significantly to the UK’s net-zero goals.
