Hydrogen UK member GeoPura has been announced as the supplier of the largest volume of green hydrogen ever contracted for a British construction project, supporting National Highways’ Lower Thames Crossing.
The landmark deal will see GeoPura supply 2,500 tonnes of green hydrogen, replacing more than 12 million litres of diesel and preventing an estimated 30,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions during construction. The hydrogen will be delivered as a managed service, including production, transport, storage and on-site distribution.
The Lower Thames Crossing will be the first major British infrastructure project to be carbon neutral in construction, with hydrogen playing a central role in displacing diesel across the site. When used in fuel cells, hydrogen produces only water as a byproduct, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality for workers and local communities.
A milestone for construction and clean energy
Six of GeoPura’s hydrogen-powered generators are already operating on site in Essex, charging batteries used in electric construction machinery. Last year, a British-made JCB hydrogen-fuelled digger became the first of its kind deployed outside a test environment when it was used on the project in Kent.
The scale of this contract is expected to accelerate hydrogen adoption across the construction sector, requiring delivery partners and their supply chains to invest in hydrogen-powered equipment and develop the skills needed to operate and maintain it.
Minister for Industry, Chris McDonald, said: “GeoPura and the Lower Thames Crossing collaboration is proof that clean energy goes hand-in-hand with major British infrastructure projects.
“Hydrogen has a key role to play in our industrial strategy, and from Nottinghamshire to Kent, our first flagship hydrogen projects will sustainably power projects up and down the country.”
Scaling British hydrogen production
Founded in 2019, GeoPura produces green hydrogen through electrolysis powered by renewable electricity at sites across the UK, including its flagship HyMarnham Power facility in Nottinghamshire. Located on the site of a former coal-fired power station and supported by Government HAR1 funding, HyMarnham Power is a leading example of how legacy fossil fuel infrastructure can be repurposed for clean energy production.
GeoPura currently employs more than 170 people across Britain and Europe, many transitioning from traditional energy sectors. The Lower Thames Crossing contract will support further expansion of its hydrogen production and supply capabilities, strengthening the UK’s hydrogen supply chain.

The Lower Thames Crossing project received planning permission in March 2025 and will provide a new road and tunnel to ease congestion at the Dartford Crossing, strengthening connections between the south-east, the Midlands and the North.
This milestone underscores the growing role of hydrogen in decarbonising construction and delivering clean, secure energy solutions at scale across the UK.
